Tents are one of the more technically demanding products in the outdoor wholesale category. The performance envelope is wide — a tent needs to keep rain out, handle wind load, manage condensation, and stay structurally sound across extended use — and the failure modes are dramatic. A tent that leaks, collapses in moderate wind, or develops mold after two uses doesn’t just generate returns. It generates reviews, and outdoor buyers share opinions about gear failures loudly.

Qualifying a tent manufacturer before committing to a wholesale order requires looking at more than product photos and price per unit. Here’s what actually matters.

Fabric Specification: Four Options, Different Trade-Offs

The fabric is the tent. Everything else — poles, zippers, seams — matters, but the fabric is what determines waterproofing, weight, breathability, and how the tent ages over multiple seasons of use. A manufacturer who can articulate the trade-offs between fabric options is one who understands what they’re building. One who defaults to “high quality fabric” without specifics doesn’t.

Polyester is the industry standard for entry- to mid-range camping tents. It’s light, holds its shape in rain (unlike cotton, which absorbs moisture and sags), and takes waterproof coatings well. The coating — typically PU (polyurethane) or silicone — determines the waterproof rating, measured in millimeters of hydrostatic head. A 1500mm rating handles light rain; 3000mm handles sustained heavy rain; anything above that is for alpine or extreme conditions. The rating should appear in the spec sheet, not just a claim that the tent is waterproof.

Poly-cotton blends trade some weight for improved breathability and better mildew resistance than pure polyester. They’re common in glamping tents and family camping tents where condensation management matters more than packability. The cotton component makes the fabric feel more premium and regulates interior temperature better, but the tent is heavier and takes longer to dry.

Oxford fabric offers high tensile strength and chemical resistance — relevant for tents that will be set up repeatedly on varied terrain, or for commercial glamping operations where tents stay up for extended periods. It’s durable against abrasion and UV degradation over multiple seasons.

Nylon has a better strength-to-weight ratio than polyester, which matters for backpacking and lightweight camping applications. It’s stronger per gram of fabric weight, handles UV exposure well when treated, and packs small. The cost is higher than polyester, which makes it more common in premium or performance-positioned products.

Fire Ratings: CPAI-84 and What It Means for Your Market

Tent flammability is a safety issue that varies significantly by market and channel. In the United States, tents marketed as flame-resistant need to comply with CPAI-84 — the camping industry standard for flame resistance that specifies how fabric must perform when exposed to an open flame. It’s not a federal law for all tents, but it’s required for many retail channels and increasingly expected by outdoor specialty retailers and e-commerce platforms.

A tent manufacturer holding CPAI-84 certification has had the tent fabric tested against a defined standard and has documentation to prove it. This matters practically because a retailer who discovers their supplier’s product doesn’t meet the flame resistance specification they assumed it did is in a difficult position — with their buyers, their insurance, and potentially with regulators.

SGS certification is a broader quality and safety verification from one of the most recognized third-party testing organizations globally. ISO 9001 covers quality management systems at the factory level. A manufacturer holding both has been evaluated by external parties, not just self-certified.

Ask to see the actual certificates, with certificate numbers and dates. Certifications expire; a current certificate means the product and factory have been evaluated recently.

Seam Construction: Where Waterproofing Actually Lives

A tent fabric rated at 3000mm hydrostatic head can still leak at every seam if the seams aren’t properly constructed and sealed. Seams are the weak point of any tent, and the construction method determines whether the waterproof rating of the fabric carries through to the finished product.

Taped seams — where a waterproof tape is applied over the stitched seam from the inside — are the standard for a properly waterproof tent. Critically taped seams apply tape only at the highest-stress points (ridge, fly seams, tent body/floor junction). Fully taped seams cover every seam in the tent. For a three-season or all-weather tent, fully taped seams are the appropriate specification.

Stitched seams without taping rely on the thread to block water ingress, which works under light rain but fails under sustained pressure. Some manufacturers offer seam sealing as a consumer-applied field treatment, which shifts the burden to the end user — not ideal for a wholesale product going to general consumers who may not know to do this.

When evaluating a sample, run water over it under light pressure at the seams and check the interior. A properly taped seam will stay dry. An unsealed seam will show moisture at the stitching line under moderate water exposure.

Pole Systems and Structural Integrity

The pole system determines how the tent sets up, how it handles wind load, and how long it lasts through repeated setup and breakdown cycles. Cheaper pole materials — fiberglass in particular — crack and shatter under cold temperatures or repeated flexing. Aluminum alloy poles are the standard for quality camping tents; they’re lighter, stronger, and far more durable across temperature ranges.

Ask specifically what alloy is being used. 7001-series aluminum is a high-strength aerospace-grade alloy used in premium tent poles. Less specified aluminum alloys perform adequately under normal conditions but may show fatigue cracking after extended use. The specification matters more for tents expected to see heavy use or adverse conditions.

For rooftop tents and glamping tents, the structural load requirements are different from standard camping tents. A rooftop tent is supporting the weight of sleeping occupants elevated above a vehicle — the structural specification needs to include load ratings, not just materials. A glamping tent designed to stay erected for extended periods needs to handle sustained wind load without the structure fatiguing.

OEM Capability and Minimum Order Reality

Genuine OEM tent manufacturing — where the buyer brings a design specification and the manufacturer produces to it — involves fabric procurement, structure engineering, sample development, and production tooling. It’s not the same as logo application on a standard product.

A manufacturer with real OEM capability can work from a design brief, produce samples that match the specification, iterate on structural details based on feedback, and maintain consistency across a production run. One who offers “OEM” but means “we’ll put your logo on our standard product” should be clear about that distinction, because the development process, timeline, and cost structure are completely different.

Minimum order quantities for custom tent manufacturing are typically higher than for accessories or softgoods — the structural complexity and tooling involved creates higher setup costs per order. Understand the MOQ for your specific product configuration before getting deep into development, because discovering the minimum is larger than your planned first order after sampling is completed is an expensive and time-consuming problem.

For buyers entering the tent category for the first time, ordering an established product in a standard configuration with branding customization is a lower-risk entry than full custom development. It allows product validation — in terms of quality, market reception, and the supplier relationship — before committing to a design that requires significant upfront development investment.

The Sample Evaluation Checklist

Before approving a tent sample for production, run through the conditions the tent will actually face.

Set it up outdoors in wind. Check whether the structure is stable under moderate wind load, whether the guy lines are long enough and the stake points are well-positioned, and whether the entrance zippers operate smoothly when the tent is under tension.

Run water over the fly for fifteen minutes at moderate pressure. Check the interior at the seams, the zipper closures, and the floor perimeter. Moisture at any of these points is a problem worth addressing before production.

Take the tent down and set it up again. The setup process should be intuitive — a tent that requires instructions for experienced campers will generate support requests and negative reviews from general consumers. Check whether the pole connections are secure and whether the stakes hold in typical soil conditions.

Check the ventilation. Condensation management is one of the most common complaints about tents, and it’s driven by whether interior air can circulate. Mesh inner panels, adjustable vents, and cross-ventilation design all affect this. A tent that traps moisture inside will generate complaints regardless of how well it performs in rain.

The sample is the commitment. If something in the sample needs to change, address it before approving production — because the leverage to make changes disappears once production is underway.
