Back To Basics : Windows Server Update Services -WSUS Part1
I found that a lot of people don’t understand or even know how to use WSUS , its one of the oldest tools , but still lets refresh our memory of what it can do for us
starting from windows 2008 R2 you can now install WSUS as part of the windows but even if you don’t have 2008 R2 you can just download it and follow almost the exact same steps
I have to say the two main requirements for WSUS are internet bandwidth and a LOT of free space 100+ GB other than that any modern computer can handle it
we navigate to server manager and select roles
we select add role
add the additional role services needed for WSUS
keep everything as it is
if the download from the wizard did not complete as it should you can download the WSUS manually and install it (but don’t forget to take note what features of the IIS is required ) http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5216
after that we will need to install Microsoft report viewer 2008 while WSUS downloading
now the source is downloaded and ready to go
now make sure to store the updates in a location with a lot of space WSUS can easily eats up 100 GB of active updates , so its based on how many products you have in your environment if you use it only for windows 7 and English only 100GB would be enough but if you have more you will need a lot more ( 500GB would be the best ,so try to be close )
I always leave the default for other applications
some time this wizard does not pop up and gives you times out in that case just open the console and go to options )
in this case we need to sync with MS
my servers have a direct connection but if you have a proxy you should enter all the required information ( don’t forget to create a special account for WSUS so the in the proxy report it does not show you downloaded 100 GB a week
)
this could take a while based on your internet connection and how busy it is
1 Hr later we can proceed
most of time English is enough select only languages that you have )
select also only the application that you have
now I recommend to select all but in the initial phase don’t select drivers and select it after , because MS have so many drivers update it will take hours )
I found that most of the times one sync per day is enough but there is no point to go above two
and we start the Sync
See you in part Two .
